Study Reveals Health Care Woes of Asian Americans
Domestic study health systems are often treated as Asian Americans and largely homogenous of a group healthy, but a new study of three years of analysis of data compiled by the government showed significant pockets of poor health and insurance with a low level of the population. Korean Americans, native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders hours at all levels of insurance, such as African Americans and whites.
The analysis conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Asia-Pacific Islander American Health Forum, noted that the proportion of elderly non-Asians, who are not very different, ranging from 12 percent of Japanese and Indians d Asia, 14% of Filipinos, 21% of the population and 24 percent of native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.
Koreans are the most unversichert-31 percent. In comparison, 21 percent of African Americans and 12% of non-elderly non-Hispanic whites are unversichert. Hispanics and American Indians and Alaska Natives are two groups who did not have any insurance higher than the Koreans, with 34 and 32% had no insurance.
“If we consider these groups in the Somme, Asian Americans rather well,” says Dr. James Caravaca, a policy analyst with the high-level Race, Ethnicity and Health Care Team, under the emperor Family Foundation. “They are healthy and do not have as many health problems to be preserved. ”
More than 16 percent of the nation of 13 million Americans, and Asia half a million native Hawaiians Pacific Islanders, and had no assurance that the group, at a higher price of insurance as Afro-Americans, Hispanics and American Indians and Alaska Natives. But look a little more closely, James said, “You Koreans are worse than African Americans, and equal American Indians and Alaska Natives.”
The low level of compulsory insurance in the Korean-American community is not the result of poverty, as one might expect, but because most Korean-Americans about 60 per cent, either individually or in small companies that can not afford, thanks to their employees health insurance.
Among the Koreans with insurance, only 49 percent of employers have offered to preserve health. Asian Indians, on the other hand, had the highest rate offered by the employer, coverage of all subgroups in Asia, with 77 percent.
The analysis is based on data for 2004, 2005 and 2006 National Health Interview Survey and Current Population Survey (CPS).
Much of the differences in coverage in health between Asians perhaps due to the fact that certain groups, as recently came to the United States, where they live, geographic, income level and the size of the company where they work.
“Given that the Asian model minority,” is a surprise for most, if they focus on specific groups, and see insurance and access to health care, “says Deeana Jang, politics and director of the Asian Pacific Islander American Health Forum. “Asian American within subgroups, there are groups with higher rates of poverty and low levels of education.”
Jang classes South-East Asians, native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders within that group, and added that there is a strong link between the level of income and insurance. Those whose income it below the poverty line often qualify for Medicaid, but it is the “working poor” who do not qualify for public assistance, but can not afford to pay insurance Private, whose fate of the study Watch.
Jang hoped that the study, the reader is the sense of the current debate on the presidential elections in healthcare. “The national debate focuses on the reform of health systems, and if your goal is to achieve health reform, all that really met, then you have to think, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Korean and Vietnamese-American all communes taken individually, “she declares.” We hope that this demonstrates the diversity of our communities. ”
“If you want to make mandates employers or workers in your reform proposal, which must be affordable. Inhabitants of the Korean community reassurance, if affordable. And for the Asia-American population, just above the poverty line and do not qualify, perhaps the Public Programs need to be strengthened, so that you are poorest of the working class. “
